The most common type of hair graft in use today is the "Follicular Unit." The follicular unit is the most popular because it is superior to all other grafts for it's natural appearance and recreation of normal hair growth in "follicular units." However, in some cases, other hair graft types are desirable and used.
Follicular Unit Grafts - The most popular, widely used and generally accepted type of hair grafts are follicular units. Hairs on your scalp grow naturally in 1 to 3 hair groupings in a single unit. These follicular unitsare left intact when they are implanted in the recpient area. Since they are left in their natural state of 1-3 hairs, they look more natural and undetectable.
Micro Grafts - are 1-3 hair grafts that are not in the follicular unit grop.
Mini Grafts - hair grafts containing 3 to 5 hairs implanted in a larger recipient site. Larger and less natural than follicular unit hair grafts but could provide density when needed. Rarely used anymore.
Maxi Grafts - hair grafts consisting of approximately 6-8 hairs in a single graft. Larger than mini and follicular units, less natural looking but may provide density when needed. Rarely used anymore.
Hair Plugs - The ancestor to follicular units. The original hair grafts which consisted of 10 to 50 hairs each. Hair Plugs were popular in the 70s and 80s, but looked horrible - despite giving men back some of their hair. Despite Hollywood's innaccurate assistance on making fun of them, no doctor in the United States would implant a hair plug today.
