Homemade Recipe for Damaged Hair

Hair can become damaged due to chemical processing, color treating, a simple lack of moisture or through excessive heat styling. In order to repair hair that is not up to snuff, using a homemade recipe for damaged hair can drastically improve the health of your hair for a reasonable price.

      Use a Moisturizing Shampoo
  1. When your hair is damaged, using a gentle moisturizing shampoo is important. Shampoo that is too strong or too drying can strip your scalp and hair of natural oils, causing it to become even more damaged. The first part of your homemade recipe for damaged hair is as follows, as provided on BeautifulWithBrains.com: Mix together 1/4 cup of liquid castille soap, 1/4 cup of aloe vera gel, 1/4 teaspoon of vegetable oil, and 1 teaspoon of glycerin. Apply the moisturizing shampoo to hair and leave for a few minutes. Rinse your hair with cool water; hot water opens the hair cuticles but cool water seals them shut, keeping the moisture in. Feel free to swap out another oil---like olive oil or almond oil---for the vegetable oil.
  2. Shampoo Less

  3. Even if you're using a moisturizing shampoo, the act of washing your hair can cause extra damage, or can slow the repair process. When you wash your hair, you are removing natural oils that coat the hair shaft to protect it. Though moisturizing shampoo is a helpful part of the homemade recipe for damaged hair, the entire process will be more successful if you can refrain from shampooing every day. Consider cutting back to once every other day; your hair will have a chance to absorb moisture and attain a healthier look. If you are worried about having oily hair between washings, consider using a homemade dry shampoo (such as corn starch) to absorb oil between shampoos.
  4. Deep Conditioning

  5. Your daily conditioner does not provide enough moisture for damaged hair. To complete your homemade recipe for damaged hair, create a deep conditioner. As suggested on BeautifulWithBrains.com, purchase a small jar of organic mayonnaise and an avocado. Combine the mayonnaise with one half of the avocado; mix the ingredients in a bowl with your fingers until the mixture becomes a light mint green color. Apply the deep conditioner to hair and wrap with plastic cling wrap or a shower cap. Cover the plastic wrap with a hot, damp towel for further moisturizing benefits. The heat will allow your hair cuticles to open and absorb moisture more easily. Leave on for up to twenty minutes, then rinse.
