It is difficult to keep oily hair clean, full and free flowing. Dirt tends to collect more quickly on oily strands, and it stays there longer. Luckily, all it takes is using the right kind of shampoo to remedy this issue. The problem is so basic and simple, you can make homemade shampoos that are specially designed to treat oily hair.
- While it is not a good idea to completely strip your hair of its natural oils, you still may want to get rid of any excess oil and build up of hair-care products. You can start with a strong, but not overpowering homemade oily hair treatment. Castile soap, when used in homemade shampoo, is a perfect cleanser for oily hair.
To add an extra benefit to your homemade oily hair treatment, add a small amount of distilled or apple cider vinegar. This will add great shine and body to your hair, while stripping away excess grime and dirt. The vinegar smell will vanish completely after you rinse your hair. - Add dried herbs to your oily hair shampoo recipe. Herbs are generally infused into the water that is used to make homemade shampoo. Sage is a good addition, as it dissolves oil, dirt and grime, and rinses away very easily. Tree tea oil and eucalyptus oil also are good additions to an oily hair treatment, but may not work as well as dried sage. Be careful, and avoid getting these oils into your eyes, as they can sting.
Retain moisture in your hair, while cleaning out the excess oils, by adding rosemary, jojoba oil or marigold. These are fairly easy to find in a health food store, are affordable and help restore the proper moisture levels to your hair. - Make an oily hair shampoo treatment at home by combining 1 cup of distilled water with 2 tbsp. of sage, 2 tbsp. of rosemary, 1 tbsp. of jojoba oil, and 1/3 cup of liquid castile soap. To make, boil the distilled water, and make an infusion with the sage and rosemary, using a tea strainer to steep the herbs. Let the mixture steep for between 25 and 45 minutes. Mix the liquid castile soap and jojoba oil into the herbal water. Cool down the mixture. Pour into a well-sealed glass bottle or other air-tight container. You may use 1 tbsp. to cleanse your hair. Rinse well.
To make a dry shampoo for oily hair, combine 1 tbsp. of cornstarch, 1 tbsp. of baking soda, and 1 tbsp. of dry oatmeal. Blend together in a food processor or blender until very fine. Take 1 tsp. of this mixture, bend over a sink with your hair hanging forward, and apply the powder mixture into your scalp near the roots. Gently massage into the scalp and hair. Brush out the dry shampoo thoroughly. This is an easy, convenient way to clean oily hair if you don't have time for a conventional shampoo.
